Stainless steel is far more resistant to rusting than regular bearing steel. This steel is high in chromium (12-18%) which creates a protective oxide layer on the outside of the steel. The type of stainless used in bearings is called 440 type and is heat hardened to Rockwell 59-62 (bearing hardness). Unlike softer stainless steels, 440 stainless is magnetic.
